OUR HISTORY

WHEN A MAN DREAMS AND WISHES, LIFE HAPPENS.

The story of Quinta do Isaac seems like a dream, and that’s exactly how it started, gradually becoming a reality. Isaac Paiva, a businessman based in Switzerland for more than two decades, since 1994, but passionate about his home country, met Luís Lopes, a man from the Douro who knew the land. Together, they shared a dream of one day producing a Douro wine. Isaac challenged his friend – a man with a deep knowledge of the best terroirs in the region – to find a small property capable of producing fine wines with their own character and identity, and thus achieve the authentic expression of their terroir through organic farming.
In 2012, after considerable deliberation, he acquired a small property of 1.36 hectares, right in the heart of the region, in Chanceleiros do Douro, near Pinhão. It has magnificent conditions for viticulture – low altitude, south-facing, and with shale soil.
Excellence, commitment and passion are the three cornerstones on which we have built our future.
True to itself and faithful to its purpose, Quinta do Isaac has created its own personality, culture, philosophy and concept.

A NEW CONCEPT

In ancient soils supported by shale walls, stone upon stone, the life and evolution of “old vines” is sustained, each vine cared for by hand as if caressing it. Our focus is on exploiting the balance between biodiversity and the environment, optimizing every natural resource, including the flora and fauna. We absolutely reject the use of any synthetic products, so as to enhance the quality of the grapes naturally. This new attitude with its eyes set on the future – the Organic Production Method – produces for the land, the products and the people-

WE MAKE WHAT WE ARE.

PRATICAS_AGRICOLAS

The entire Estate has been using the Organic Production Method since November 2012, which means that the production always bears in mind the land, the products and the people.

FARMING PRACTICES

GREEN MANURING (dynamic accumulator plants)

Like other properties with the same concept of interactivity and crossover with all the natural elements of the ecosystem, the product on our property is born from soils fertilized by the autumn planting of legumes between the trellises. This enables a green manuring of the vine and replaces the use of artificial fertilizers.
This focus on the continuous interaction between natural elements has enabled Quinta do Isaac to practise a cultivation that influences the healthy quality of the grapes. This results in successful harvests and outstanding wines, the end product of the natural development of the fruit that is their source – the grapes.

GREEN PRUNING AND SECONDARY SUPPORT HEDGES

Pruning is one of the essential tasks in the production cycle of continuous-growing stem plants. It helps the stems to rejuvenate naturally, and to produce healthier, better protected fruit. It regulates renewed productive capacity by preventing the elongation and consequent premature ageing of the permanent structure. Being aware of this, Quinta do Isaac also practises “green pruning” and removes the water shoots, always with the goal of obtaining quality fruit (grapes), regardless of the age of the original vines. Thus, we adapt the idea of rejuvenation of the plants to the estate’s own endogenous microclimate, while at the same time preventing plagues and diseases.
It was also clearly important to plant secondary support hedges, and encouraging their growth throughout the vineyard, always with the aim of optimizing methods capable of improving the quality of the harvest.

WE MAKE WHAT WE ARE

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE WILDLIFE

SHELTER FOR BATS

The feeding habits of various species of wildlife help protect crops and contribute to the natural balance. The same is just as true in vineyards. Bats are mammals that feed on moths that do a great deal of damage to vines. However, after feeding, these migratory animals go elsewhere in search of shelter.
So that they could live near our vines without feeling the need to leave, we installed bat-boxes at Quinta do Isaac – shelters located around the vineyard and olive grove. In return, the bats help us fight the pests naturally and sustainably.
We therefore have no need to use chemical pesticides in the vineyard, making its development increasingly organic thanks to this awareness of the link between the needs of plants and those of wildlife.

Os Nossos Vinhos

OUR WINES

Thanks to our passion and our cultivation methods, our vineyards are able to produce wines with a unique character and personality, which always aim to express the best qualities of the terroir.

QUINTA DO ISAAC DOURO DOC TINTO

Life is full of opportunities, and QUINTA DO ISAAC is one of them. We want to produce high quality wines with their own identity, and thus achieve the true expression of the terroir through organic farming. 2013 was the second harvest of this wine, which is made only with grapes from our vineyards where we practise organic viticulture and which has been certified since 2016.
The goal was to obtain a purer wine, with firm, elegant tannins. The wines produced by means of organic rather than conventional farming are much more personal, more original, have more character and expression of the place where they are born – they are the expression of the terroir.

OUR OLIVE OIL

OLIVE OIL

The olive tree truly epitomises the Mediterranean. An ancient tree with biblical connotations that objectively identifies the cuisine and traditions of the Mediterranean basin, it produces one of the healthiest and most versatile natural fats for a rich and balanced diet.

Our passion for olive oil led us to try to produce one of the best olive oils in the world, one that would smell like and comprehend what surrounds us, our Earth! The estate’s 120 olive trees are carefully tended. Madural, Verdeal and Cordovil varieties predominate, and these olive trees can be found throughout the property, where they cover the paths that criss-cross the vineyard or cluster in groves in areas where no vines have been planted. In addition to producing exceptional olive oil, the olive tree is also part of the biodiversity of the vineyard. Our olive oil, which has an extremely low acidity, is extracted from the first cold pressing of the olives and is classified as Extra Virgin.
